Festival of Pacific Arts 2016

I know, it’s been a couple of days since my last post but so much has been happening on this wonderful island I call home! Guam is playing host to 27 delegations to include: Australia, New Zealand, Easter Island (Rapa Nui), Kosrae, Chuuk, French Polynesia, Tahiti and more and over 3000 people. We are currently on day 5 of the 2 week spectacle and how lucky are we to be able to witness and experience all these cultures in one place.

The Festival of the Pacific Arts has been held every four years since 1972 and brings together artists and cultural practitioners from around the Pacific region for two weeks of festivity. It is recognized as a major regional cultural event and the largest gathering in which Pacific peoples unite to enhance their respect and appreciation of one another.

The opening ceremony was held last Sunday at the Paseo Stadium and filled to full capacity. The nearly 5-hour event introduced every delegation along with a performance…a sneak peek as to what people can expect over the course of 2-weeks.  Every day there have been workshops, demonstrations, musical and dance performances, theatre pieces, readings, tours, and more.
