It’s a growing trend on island- acai bowls. Many have become fans of this ‘superfood’ because of it’s antioxidant qualities. The acai berry is an inch-long, reddish-purple fruit. It comes from the acai palm tree, which is native to Central and South America. And while you can find acai bowls at almost all the coffee shops here on island…there is one generating buzz in the heart of Guam.
Opened since April 8th of this year, Mighty Purple Cafe is owned and operated by 4 good friends- Randy and Roke Alcantara, Marvin Manibusan, and Kimo Lujan… who wanted to set up shop in Guam’s capital- Hagatna. Located on Hesler Street near the newly built Guam Museum and adjacent to street wear apparel and sneaker shop Clans, the village is seeing a revitalization, with small businesses popping up. According to the owners, MPC is still in it’s taste and development stage which is why the menu is basic. They will slowly start to add fresh lemonades, sandwiches, wraps, and more in the coming months. And despite doing little to no advertising, word of mouth seems to be doing the trick and cafe has seen it’s fair share of foot traffic.
Naturally, the biggest seller is the Mighty Acai Bowl. You can get it in a 16oz or 32oz. It starts off with a layer of house made granola and then it is filled to the brim with that purple goodness. It is topped with even more granola and fresh fruits like bananas, blueberries, kiwi, strawberries, freshly grated coconut and honey. Trust me when I say the 16oz is good for 2 people and the 32oz can satisfy the tummies of at least 3 people! The acai is smooth in texture unlike some that come off as too grainy.
Another hit with the customers is the Li-Hing Bowl. Li-Hing powder is a palate pleaser for many offering a sweet, salty, and sour kick to whatever it is added to…in this case, it is mixed with chopped up fuji apples, pineapple, and local mango. Boy does it send your tastebuds into overdrive! They top this bowl off with stump of the pineapple which serves a couple of purposes- 1) presentation and 2) customer can take it home and plant it!
The guys have a lot in store for MPC and aren’t rushing it…making sure to listen to customer feedback.
Mighty Purple Cafe is open Monday-Saturday from 9am-6pm with plans to expand hours including opening on Sundays in the near future. For more information, check out their IG page under ‘mightypurplecafe’ and interested in more reviews? You can also find them on Yelp.
